Race Day Strategy

Taking on the Heat Tri is coming up this weekend and I have begun to strategies in my head. The strategy for my last tri was simple, finish. This time around I would like to turn in a respectable time. The swim is short (300m) in a pool, so I will just have to get a good rhythm and not try and go crazy fast at the beginning. The bike is another story. Last time I tried to take it easy on the bike, thinking I would save my legs for the run. Not this time. I am going to push it much harder on the bike. I would like to average around 16-18mph. The run should not be to hard, as long as the weather cooperates. I would like to run the 5k in under 30 minutes.

That is the plan, now all I have to do is execute it. That's the hard part.

Back to studying, CPA exam in 4 days, yikes.

Sunday Workout

I do not recommend eating a huge plate of chicken pasta before a hard workout, which is exactly what I did yesterday. After about 5 miles my stomach began to cramp so I decided to move to the pool. 30 minutes of swimming and I was spent. Not a bad workout although I did not hit the weights.

I plan on getting in one or two more good workouts this week and then resting up for the tri this weekend. I also signed up for the Mud Run with some co-workers today. It looks like a great time!

Ridding in a Loafer

A couple of months ago my Dad and I headed out to ride in the Collin County Classic (an annual 30 mile group ride). The ride was close to his house, so I met him there and we took one car over to the ride. Still in a early morning haze I grabbed my gear and we were off. We arrived and I began to put on all my accessories, when I realized that I had forgotten one of my shoes. We contemplated calling it a day and heading home, but we had both been looking forward to this ride for a few weeks. We quickly assessed our options and I soon realized that I would be riding for the next two hours with one bike shoe and one loafer.

Taking on the Heat Triathlon Rescheduled

Apparently the pool is not "ready" for the triathlon this weekend so they are going to reschedule it for the following week. This works for me, because I have a full day review course this weekend. Here is the e-mail that was sent out...

Triathletes,

We were just informed a short while ago that the pool will now not be ready for swimming on August 16th. The good news is that the pool and the city are allowing us to move the race date to August 23rd so we will get to race!

Unfortunately, these circumstances are out of our control, but we are happy that we will be able to put on the race even though it will be one week later.

Here are your options:
#1 - do nothing - pick up your packet on August 21st or 22nd and show up August 23rd ready to race.
#2 - Transfer to the Take on the Heat 2010 race by emailing staci@playtri.com by Thursday, August 13th with your first and last name and the words Transfer to 2010.
#3 - Request a refund by emailing staci@playtri.com by Thursday, August 13th with your first and last name and the words Refund for Take on the Heat.

Please remember in making your decision that this event is a fundraiser for The Benevolent Fund that benefits the charities supported by The Colony Fire Department and your support is greatly appreciated.

If we do not hear anything back from you by Thursday, August 13th, we will assume you will be racing with us on August 23rd.

The race website and active.com will be updated with all the current information by tomorrow.

Again, we do apologize for the inconvenience and hope to see you all out at the race on Sunday, August 23rd!

No big deal, I just thought their excuse for postponing was funny. Tonight is the last night for softball, so the next two weeks should be open for some hard workouts.

Light Evening Workout

Tonight I had a pretty light workout since I biked this morning. It was still over 100 degrees @ 7, so I decided to go to the gym, which worked out because I needed to get a swim in. Apparently Sunday night at the gym is not the place to be, because it was empty. Anyway had a pretty god workout. Started with a 3 mile run followed by light weights and a 20 minute swim. Feeling pretty good except I think I am coming down with a sinus infection. I just had a vitamin C pack and drank a lot of fluids, so hopefully it will pass.

Great Ride

I had a great bike ride this morning with my dad (pictured with me @ Tour Dallas back in April). We rode about 24 miles around White Rock Lake, which was packed with people running, biking, and rollerblading. Every weekend the lake is crowded with people out exercising. The energy out at the lake is addictive. With the temperatures during the summer well over 100 degrees the lake makes you feel 10 degrees cooler.

Running at White Rock Lake is also great because there are water fountains almost every mile (its about 9.5 miles around the lake). Last week I made the run around the lake. I was a bit unsure I could make it as I usually just run 3-5 miles, but with some coxing from a friend I committed. We meet at 7 am so the weather was still very cool. I felt strong the whole run, and when we finished my confidence was soaring. I really enjoy being pushed outside my comfort zone and accomplishing something I once thought impossible.

The next week is going to be tough. I have a CPA review course on Saturday and then the Take on the Heat Triathlon in the Colony on Sunday. Its a sprint triathlon with a 350m swim, 13 mile bike, and 5k run split. After my last race I have decided to try and push the bike portion and speed up my transitions. Wish me luck...

Superdrome Velodrome

Frisco TX, a suburb of Dallas, has a Velodrome that looks pretty sweet! There is something about riding 20-30 mph in a group of other riders with no brakes that sounds like a really good time. I am thinking about taking the class (required to ride on the track) but I will have to go out and take a look first. They ride every friday through November. Check it out...

10,001 Miles

This blog will document my way through runs, bikes, swims, and any other self powered mode of transportation I can come up with until I hit 10,001 miles. Thanks for stopping by and feel free to leave comments, suggestions, words or encouragement or anything else.
